Irish firm Architecture Republic designed this beautiful renovation on an residential house in Dublin, which consists of a cruciform constructed out of polycarbonate and steel that extends from the center of the building out into a jutting, second-level extension in the rear of the house. The original facade is preserved, while the interior is completely reworked to be a sleek, open-feeling, modern living space.

The house sits on a terraced site, whose split-section layout is native to the area: a large open space to the front, with smaller rooms to the rear at a half-level difference. The project began by leveling out the interior by extensive removal of the existing extension, internal walls and earth. the result was a more open, double-height volume.

Platforms were created for dressing, sleeping, studying, relaxing and reclining, while the “trunk” contains a service elements including kitchen, toilet, storage and stairs. The plastic elements become opaque or semi-transparent foils for natural daylight (from the sides as well as skylights), reflected light and artificial back-lighting. These same sheets also ‘wrap’ around to serve various functions as walls, floors and ceiling.

The architects describe the Last Resort concept as a ‘floating mobile architecture’. The design recently won a competition, and with funding underway the team expects to begin fabrication on these sleek water homes by the end of the year.

According to RAFAA, the conceptual requirements of being in motion and the desire to simultaneously feel at home are contradictory in nature. This difficulty is resolved by a new typology that will deal with usability, space and technology.

The two-level structure is about five meters wide and 15 meters long. Sleeping bunks, technical equipment and hatches are built into the lower deck. The design recently won a competition, and with funding underway the team expects to begin fabrication on these sleek water homes by the end of the year.
The floating home is about 5 meters wide and 15 meters long with two levels. Sleeping bunks, mechanical equipment and hatches are on the lower level and the upper level contains living space, a kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms.

In total there are six beds and a sliding panel helps close off the rooms for more privacy. Vertical blinds on the facade act as shading devices for the interior as well as a privacy system. Stairs lead up to the roof, which serves as an extra deck, and roof-integrated solar panels generate electricity for the two electric engines that propel the home.

The horizontal, undulated shape of the waterfront is inspiration for the design of the project. Furthermore, it serves as means for orientation for the residents. The landscape can be understood as an extension of the living room. Therefore, an unobstructed view of the landscape enhances the spatial quality of the design.

Underground House, designed by EM2N architect, located in Greifensee, Switzerland.

Haus Gross in Greifensee, Switzerland, looks like a typical house by all accounts. But this modern and inventive design proves that looks can be deceiving. This understated, low-profile house holds a buried treasure in the form of an underground living space. The 721-sq.-ft. sub-grade home addition includes two sunken open-air courtyards leading into the three children’s bedrooms, a bathroom and a state-of-the-art home theater for private film screenings. A two-storey glazed façade lets light flood every corner, above ground and below.
